Mixed Match vs Hermitage

Friday Night Fright Night

PVC put in a poor performance against Hermitage in Friday night’s mixed league match at Cannon’s.  In a match littered with mistakes, Hermitage were never put under any pressure, in fact it wasn’t until the last set that PVC created any real meaningful attacks.

From the start, it was clear that PVC were not firing on all cylinders as Hermitage sped into a 6-1 lead. Stand-in captain, Martin, called a time-out, but this did nothing to change the pattern.  A succession of poor first passes, with people being rooted to the ground meant that Hermitage continued to build their lead.  Even when PVC managed to wrest service from Hermitage, they served poorly, either serving out and handing the initiative straight back to Hermitage, or by not putting enough pressure on the Hermitage defence with the service.

Martin changed the team around for the second set and things started brighter, with a number of close rallies being played out.  Hermitage had a small advantage in the early exchanges, but a debated call on a PVC attack seemed to knock the home side and Hermitage took full advantage to seal the set easily.  The Hermitage team played competent volleyball, without ever having to be spectacular.  They invariably served in, their first pass was sufficient to give them opportunities in attack and their defence was mobile and organised.

By the third set, PVC’s morale had vanished and it was played out with little verve and spirit. Sadly, this was just one of those days when things seem to come unstuck.  These were the same players who preformed so well last year, so it is up to the players to forget about the match and make sure that the next time out, they fight from the first serve.
